WHAT IS KARMA YOGA?
The word KARMA came from the root word KRI or TO DO. The word KARMA like the word YOGA has many many meanings in Hinduism, like result, causality, product, deeds, destiny, action etc. Karma Yoga was first expounded in SATAPATHA BRAHMA-NA. It is based on the concept of NISKAMA KARMA or UNSELFISH ACTIONS. Hindus believe that BY SELF LESS ACTIONS one can attain self realization. So, Karma Yoga in a nutshell is ATTAINING SELF REALIZATION OR FREEDOM FROM REINCARNATIONS THROUGH SELF_LESS ACTIONS.
Karma-Yoga is the Yoga of service to others and to God. It is a suitable orientation for those of an active nature, those who wish to work for the manifestation of the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. The main thrust of the practice is the renunciation of fruits of action. That is, activities are undertaken for their own sake, the results being left to God. Activities are assumed for the benefit of the greater good, without concern for personal benefit. The path of Karma-Yoga is described in detail in the Bhagavad-Gîtâ.
Perform your duty, for action
Is far better than non-action.
Even maintaining your body
Cannot be done without action.
[Bhagavad Gita III.8]
